Motives for Gaming

We live in a world filled with sports, every week teams face off against each other; whether it be baseball, soccer or football. A constant battle against each other to enter championships, win titles and gain prestige. As audience members, the majority of us will never get to play in those super stadiums or on those famous soccer fields. Instead we play similarly competitive games but on a much lower scale and scope.
The past few weeks Lacy has been going over several authors and articles that relate to gaming and learning. One of the authors said, that people who participate in games can be divided into two main groups, those who are interest driven and those who are driven because of friendship. Competitive play vs recreational.
Do you think there are drawbacks or consequences between the two? Between the side of recreation and competitive play? Is it wrong that our society places such a high emphasis on competition, and do results justify everything?

  1. Personally, I think that competition play is going to bring out the best in any particular person that actually want to win. There are some people on this earth that were born wanting to win in anything they do weather its a soccer game or a game of checkers. Others don't care much and can accept losing. It really depends on the person. cool post.

  3. I like how you you identified competitive vs recreational very interesting way to look at it. Competitive is more you are super into it and everything matters a lot( at least if you are competitive). While rec is more just for fun and everybody is just there to have a good time. Results do not always justify everything, but they can justify a lot of stuff.

  4. I dont really believe in recreational play becuase there is always at least one person or team that will refuse to win at all costs, whether it be fair or unfair. Depending on the time and place I may be that guy. Recreational sports are also fun, but I dont feel like anyone tries, while competitive sports pushes everyone past their boundaries and lets them see and do things they've never done before
