Whew, what to talk about.
College can be so weird sometimes. So many choices and decisions. Unlike high school we only have four months to meet new people and really get to know them. To find those with similar tastes, ideas and dreams. Because of that, the first day of class can be some of the most nerve wracking and trying times of the year.

Prof. Manship, Mrs. Lacy, was really good at being able to quell those fears. She used string games to help break us into our surroundings, meet new people and just have fun. I got to talk to those around me and learn things that were interesting and new. Well you may be asking yourself, "How do string games relate to English class?". Well... they don't. Just Kidding! Our class is a writing and inquiry class. We read an article by Gee who compared learning to playing games. I believe that these string games can be compared to learning in so many ways. We all learn at different paces, have different strengths and interests and sometimes it takes us a little bit of trials a bit of errors and a bit of sweat to get it down.
The first day was great, and I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the semester. A first step, bit of exploration, but definitely the beginning of an interesting journey.
I agree with your statement that string games can be compared to learning in so many different ways. I think that by finishing the string games we have to learn how to accept help, or provide help to others. This is the point of the "inquiry" style of learning we're doing.
ReplyDeleteSorry can help this but that picture of that sign at the top is really cool and they have one in downtown Charlotte. I agree with you that the first day is very nerve racking. I agree with you in the fact that the string games were used for us to interact with people around us and get to know them better, and also that we all learn and different ways and seeing what worked for us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your string games idea. They taught me different ways of completing a task and that just because you did one thing wrong doesnt mean you cant go back and fix it or try again. It made me think of papers and the multiple drafts you must write to achieve success in the end.
